Welcome to the thirteenth day of my daily October posts AND the first day of Spellcaster Week!! Throughout these next 19-days, I will be posting different spooky fun facts, tricks and treats. Today, I will be talking about the history of witches’ uniform—specifically, their pointy hats. Enjoy!
A few years ago, I visited York, England— my favorite city in all of Britain! Although I visited York every year since I started university back in 2021, this specific visit in 2023 was a spooky experience as I only attended witch and ghost tours. I took a witch tour around the city and our tour guide explained to me the reason why witches are portrayed as wearing pointy hats! Now I’m sure there are plenty of reasons and factors as to why witches are depicted with pointy hats, but this is the reason that she told me during the tour. She said that the “healing women” or simply healers during certain plagues in England would wear these large pointy hats to let people know that they are healers and can help them. I thought it was a pretty interesting detail, although it might not be the main factor for all of the reasons as to why witches are portrayed this way—but it is one of my favorite little stories I have ever learned through a tour!
Thank you for reading and make sure to come back for tomorrow's post!
Sincerely,
your 21st century poet <3
