Happy early St. Patrick’s Day!! St. Patrick, or sometimes known as the “Apostle of Ireland”, was a teenager from Roman Britain who was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave in early 5th century A.D. After six years of enslavement, he escaped. However, he decided to return to Ireland later on to spread the gospel. Today, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, or “St. Patty’s” as a day to honor Irish culture and St. Patrick himself on March 17th, the same day he passed away well over 1,000 years ago.
A little extra fun fact for y’all, the three leaf clover represents the trinity—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! ☘️ However, the four leaf clover’s leafs represent faith, hope, love and the most well-known attribute, luck. 🍀 They were believed to ward off evil spirits.
What are your plans this St. Patrick’s day? Make sure to wear green, otherwise the leprechauns—occasional shoemaking or guardians of treasure (a.k.a. the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow) faerie creatures from Irish folklore, will pinch you! The color green is believed to make you invisible to leprechauns, therefore, they won’t pinch you if you wear it! Although, the folklore faerie is assumed to not have existed until the 8th century, 300 years after St. Patrick himself died.
Another reason to wear green on St. Patrick’s day is due to the beautiful greenery of Ireland. The Irish wore green as a sign of rebellion against the British in the late 18th century. The color green is more than a protective measure against leprechauns, it is a center of pride for Irish culture!
