Welcome to the twenty-second day of my daily October posts! Throughout these next 10-days, I will be posting different spooky fun facts, tricks and treats. Today, I will be ranking the top 10 most powerful film slashers! If you don't agree with any of these ranks, then please let me know your chosen ranks in the comments below!! Enjoy!
Michael Meyers - I had to rate him as #1, because not only is he my own personal favorite slasher, but he is also the literal embodiment of evil. Although he is a slow-walking slasher, I do find quite a bit of horrific behavior in him as he is not only a disturbed man in general, but he is also someone who began his killing as a child against his own family—specifically his own sisters. Another disturbing theme within the Halloween (1978) series is that we never see his face as an adult. The only time we see his face was when he was a child, but besides that we only see his mask and he never speaks, adding to his overall eeriness. He is never killed by any human and always comes back stronger. He has set rules for himself which this writer finds quite interesting—such as: he will kill animals, family members and teenagers, but not younger kids.
Freddy Krueger - Yet another strong contender for most powerful film slasher. He is a ghost of a former child-murderer who infects people through an almost parasitic way and kills them within their own mind as soon as he enters their dreams. He sits in second place as he was murdered by other humans before entering his ghostly form.
Jason Vorhees - Another strong contender as throughout his iterations he has become a demon and a strong killer—focusing on large groups of individuals that should be at peak health as young men and women. Although he is generally killed off by humans, he always comes back. I rated him a tad bit lower as the two slashers above him are killers by their own volition, whereas Jason listens to his mother’s orders in his mind. In fact, Jason is easily manipulated to believe that others are his mother so they are able to escape. Therefore, he is not as powerful as he seems—psychologically at least.
Art the Clown - I had a hard time placing Art as he starts off as a simple psycho-slasher, but then is killed and brought back as a monstrous demon. Ultimately, I find his strength, regeneration and gore-filled kills to mark him as a powerful force within the slashing ranks.
Candyman - This was an interesting one to place as Candyman is more of a superstitious urban legend that comes to light rather than a regular slasher. Although similar to Freddy Krueger, in the way of how he attacks people. I mean this because they both have urban legends surrounding them, and they both remind me of polar bears—in the way that once you see them, they have already been stalking you. The idea of Candyman is that if you say his name five times in a mirror, he will haunt you and eventually kill you. Because he is a spirit rather than a physical person, he is a lot harder to kill and thus is set at fifth place on this list.
Chucky - Although a doll, he has the power to multiply himself and interact with the things around him as a demon. He is lower on this list because he is a sort-of satirical slasher. He is also in love with a wife, which is important to bring up as he has some level of human emotions unlike most others on this list.
Norman Bates - Yet another mommy-issued monster. Norman Bates is controlled by the thoughts of his mother and goes on a murderous rampage. However, he is still a simple human-slasher and does not have any powers besides that. He is ultimately killed by humans as well.
Leatherface - Although one of the most disgusting and gory slashers on this list, Leatherface is ultimately a monstrous man with some powers (in later iterations anyway), but he still remains someone who is controlled by his family for the most part.
Pearl - Could you guess—another oddly obsessed maniac? Pearl, although she has her own dreams of fame, is obsessed with her husband—which is her downfall. She is a human-slasher who is ultimately killed by other humans. Although she has many manipulative techniques that place her at ninth on this list of the top 10 slashers, her sweet disposition makes her someone who is hard to place and therefore usually not seen as a threat. I find this aspect of her nature to be extremely dangerous.
Ghostface - Finally in tenth place we have Ghostface. He was hard to place as he is one of the most iconic slashers in all of film history, but he is also a different person wearing the mask every single time. Occasionally the Ghostface mask is not only worn by one individual. Whether the person taking up the mask is doing it for fame or daddy issues, it doesn’t really matter. They’re always a human that gets killed and found out by other humans. Ghostface is a satirical-slasher within himself and is not very gory—which this writer prefers! Ultimately, I place him at 10th because he does have a large kill count overall and the symbol of what the Ghostface mask stands for is where his power and fear factor comes from.
Question of the hour: Who would win during a fight? - Starting off all of the human slashers would die first which would be Ghostface, Pearl, Norman Bates and Leatherface. Next up, we would have Chucky and Jason die, as they both have human emotions and can be manipulated in such ways. Next would be Art the Clown as he has also been killed by a human, but I can see Candyman and Art going at it together and ultimately killing one another as spirits. Finally, between Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger you would have to ask the question—is Michael Myers able to dream? If so, Freddy Krueger would win. However, since Michael Myers is the embodiment of all evil and a demon within his own right, I believe that he would be able to kill Freddy Krueger due to Freddy not being able to penetrate Michael’s demonic mind.
Thank you for reading and make sure to come back for tomorrow's post!
