Welcome to the seventh day of my daily October posts! Throughout these next 25-days, I will be posting different spooky fun facts, tricks and treats. Today, I will be ranking the most powerful Halloween monsters! If you don't agree with any of these ranks, then please let me know your chosen ranks in the comments below!! Enjoy!

  1. Vampires - I ranked vampires at the top because they have been the king and queens of monsters for quite some time now. If we're only talking base level vampire, then Dracula in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel was able to shapeshift into a large dog, a bat, elemental dust, and mist/fog. He was extremely strong, immortal and difficult to kill. To kill a vampire in this novel, one had to stake its heart, cut its head off and fill its mouth with garlic prior to burying it. On top of that, they are extremely fast, dominant, intellectual, and conniving. They can also spider-climb down walls. On top of all of that, Dracula can control the weather. Finally, he is able to hypnotize and enslave his prey’s minds.

  1. Mummies - Yet another strong contender! Although mummification is a large part of Egyptian history, I am strictly speaking on the supernatural Halloween productions of them and not their historical significance. Mummies in this context are corpses with souls that have already moved on. They are magical beings enraged by the unknown barging into their tombs and awakening them from their eternal rest. They are able to conjure swarms of locusts and ancient curses. Some mummies have been given powers of telekinesis, super-human strength and even rapid regeneration.

  1. Werewolves - It’s always a werewolf vs. a vampire, but on this list a werewolf is only in 3rd place. These unfortunate and deadly beasts are forced to arise on the nights of the full moon through excruciating pain. Their skin rips off, bones break and grow into beastly positions, teeth protrude through their previous ones—knocking their human pearly whites to the ground. Fur grows through their newly formed skin and just when you think the pain is over, the instincts kick in, taking away your right mind and leaving you to be a victim of your own monstrous prowess. Likely the most miserable of all of the monsters on this list as werewolves tend to be good people who have to bear the consequences of something they did not ask for or are able to control. Werewolves are strong, fast and fully instinctual. Constantly experiencing the pain of losing those around them and moving around to avoid being found out.

  1. Witches - Although powerful in magical abilities, base level witches can only conjure spells with elements or potions. In order to be higher on this list, they would have to be able to produce magic out of their own hands rather than through wands, broomsticks or cauldrons. A strong threat in their own right by curses and spells alone!

  1. The Headless Horseman - The iconic 1820 short story by Washington Irving, later adapted into the beloved 1999 film starring Johnny Depp. The headless horseman is a strong, angry and vengeful spirit. Once a Hessian soldier beheaded by a cannonball during the Revolutionary War, now a monster of the night. He searches for his head amongst the victims of his perilous behavior. He wears a flaming pumpkin head on top of his ghostly apparition. He rides a black horse with glowing red eyes and wields a large sword.

  1. Frankenstein’s Monster - The infamous monster made up of cadaver parts—life made from death. The first monster of all science fiction. Frankenstein’s monster is 8-feet tall, sporting yellowish sickly skin, pearly white teeth, black flowing hair, black lips, and bright watery eyes. The monster is of unbelievable strength and ugliness. His ability to learn and adapt makes him all the more terrifying. Similar to a child in his state of mind—his focus lies entirely on the abandonment of his father/creator—Viktor. A tragically melancholic character, although he is rather misunderstood. A complex creation to say the least.

  1. The Invisible Man - This is an interesting character as he is—well, invisible! His ability within itself is a worrisome position. He can get away with anything—murder, arson, public nudity just to name a few. In such a state, the laws don’t apply to him, and that my friends, is the most dangerous trait of all—the abolition of all natural consequences.

  1. Zombies - This one is lower on the list as zombies are directly “infected”. Therefore, they are really just plagued individuals spreading their infection through cannibalistic ways. At base level, they are slow, brain dead and fast-spreading.

  1. Ghosts - Lower on this list as they can’t really hurt you. Most ghosts are simply aspirations of lives once lived, now forsaken. Usually tragic figures with little ability to communicate with the living. The worst they can usually do is flicker lights, slam doors and move objects.

  1. Skeletons - Bottom of this list due to their sheer whimsical nature. They hold the undead position with zombies and ghosts. Although less common, I just think it would suck to be one. Imagine only being immortal bones—no powers, no ability to eat or speak.

Honorable mentions

  • The Boogeyman: Terrifying creature of the night. Focus on child abduction and silent skills. He is a master of all things that go bump in the night. His rhyme alone puts him on this list. Probably the scariest creature on this list with relation to folklore from many different countries worldwide.

  • Killer Clowns: Although this phenomena has become extremely real and common, the original fear of clowns prior to media productions of demonic entities or the actual serial killers, was enough to add them as an honorable mention. The theory of a wolf in sheep’s clothing becomes a fact in these instances. I don’t blame kids for fearing these wide-smiled performers.

Thank you for reading and make sure to come back for tomorrow's post!
